Beautiful Weekend
Put on your sunglasses and grab your frisbee, this weekend is going to be excellent. As the low pressure system that provided those quick May flurries yesterday tracks quickly northeast, a significant dry air mass will drive cloud cover out tomorrow. We will take advantage of the sunny skies with temperatures warming into the mid 40s by the end of this week and the mid 50s for the weekend.

Winter’s Back … Briefly

The rain/snow mix will continue into tonight when temperatures cool allowing for little accumulation.  There may still be a few lingering snow flurries early tomorrow morning with temperatures rising into the mid to upper 40s for the end of the week.  We will have a nice start to spring break with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the upper 40s and lower 50s for the weekend.

Greater Chance for Precipitation Tomorrow
As a center of low pressure passes to our south tomorrow into tomorrow night cloud cover will increase with periods of rain and a few snowflakes occurring overnight. Steady winds will return Wednesday as the storm deepens off the coast allowing for a few lingering showers Wednesday morning. The system will quickly track northeast as high pressure builds over our area providing clearing skies and sun towards the end of the week.
 
Tonight:  Scattered clouds with light northerly winds.  Temperatures remain relatively warm only dropping into the lower 30s. Low 31.
Tomorrow:  Cloud cover increases becoming mostly cloudy with northerly winds around 5 mph.  Temperatures reach into the lower 40s. High 42. Showers move into the area into the late afternoon – 30%.

Cloud cover thickens and wind speeds steadily increase as the low pressure system that brought rain to our area earlier this week quickly intensifies off the southern New England coast as its energy collides with another system emerging from the Mississippi Valley. The storm will funnel plenty of upper level moisture into our area from the northwest tomorrow producing heavy cloud cover in addition to wind steady winds around 25mph; gusting upwards of 35mph. Winds will settle and partial sunshine will return for this weekend.
Tonight: Cloudy with winds becoming northwesterly between 5 and 10 mph. Lows will fall into the upper 20s. Low 28. Chance for light snow tonight – 50%

Although clouds will linger Tuesday, temperatures climb into the lower 50s with daytime highs remaining relatively warm in the mid to upper 40s for this week.

A center of low pressure will plow right through our area tomorrow providing light snow showers accumulating around 1 inch of snow tomorrow evening before dry air is wrapped into the low cutting off its moisture supply. Cloud cover will wrap around the low as it tracks to our northeast increasing cloud cover providing mostly cloudy skies into midweek breaking occasionally for a peak at the sun.

Having been hammered by snow for the last several weeks now, we’re due for a nice weekend.  Though it won’t feel like spring or summer, there will be plenty of sunshine this weekend allowing for some snow melt. Temperatures will only be in the mid 30s today and with the addition of high winds you will feel significantly colder. High pressure will work its way into the Mississippi River Valley tomorrow and into our area by Friday providing pleasant and sunny conditions into the weekend, though it will remain cold.

A mix of snow and sleet will begin to fall this afternoon continuing overnight. Snow will be heavy at times.  The system will push out of the area by late morning/early afternoon tomorrow, leaving us with additional snowfall accumulations of 4-6 inches. Skies will break tomorrow giving us mostly clear conditions remaining fairly cool with highs just reaching the upper 30s.  Winds on Wednesday will be high at 20-25 mph with gusts upwards of 35 mph.  This weekend looks to be the best weekend we’ve had in a while, with no snow and partly sunny skies.

Another Winter Storm Watch

The sun goes back into hiding as high pressure is booted out of the area by an approaching low pressure system to our west. Flurries will being during the morning hours tomorrow becoming steady by the afternoon. Sleet will mix in by tomorrow evening changing back to snow by morning. Accumulations of 4-6 inches are expected as NWS has already issued another winter storm watch. Looks as though DC may be slammed again with up to 20 inches and 35+ mph winds. Winds in our area will be strong Wednesday as the system blows through into Thursday. Clouds will break Thursday and temperatures will rise above freezing allowing for some snow melt.

 

Tonight:  Increasing clouds overnight becoming mostly cloudy by morning with light and variable winds.  Temperatures drop into the upper teens. Low 17.

Tomorrow:  Overcast with light and variable winds. Temperatures rise just to the upper 20s, touching 30 High 30. Flurries will begin to move into the area early, with heavier snow later in the evening and overnight – 90%.  It will start as snow mixing with sleet during the evening, but mainly a snow event.

Tomorrow Night:  Continued cloud cover with winds will be light and from the east.  Temperatures fall be in the mid 20s Low 24. Snow will continue to fall overnight – 100%.

Wrapping up the Blizzard of '10

I'm sure you've heard about the Blizzard of 2010 by now.  It is long gone, but the damage has certainly been done.  Hundreds of thousands lost power due to the weight of the wet, heavy snow.  Some areas received over 3 feet!  Colesville, MD took the prize of the most snow with 40".  Unfortunately for storm-weary Mid-Atlantic residents, another storm may impact the region during the middle part of the week, bringing more accumulating snow!  This one may track a bit farther north, impacting New York City and Southern New England as well.  As always, the exact track determines how much snow falls.  It'll be a fun one to track.

Another foot of snow?!

Get ready for some more snow!  The huge system that is currently dumping a lot of rain on Texas and the Mississippi Valley region will pick up more moisture from the Gulf of Mexico before moving into our area Friday morning into the afternoon.  This should be mainly a snow event, but there still is a possibility of some freezing rain and/or sleet tomorrow night.  The National Weather Service has already issued a Winter Storm Warning calling for 16 or more inches of snow with some areas receiving two feet.  This storm is similar to the one that affected Charlottesville back in December.  The storm will also wrap in much colder air as the temperature on Saturday will drop throughout the day to around 10 degrees.  Rural areas outside Charlottesville may see single digit temperatures.  Snow should begin to move out late Saturday night through Sunday morning before breaking to give us partly sunny skies.

Tonight – Some clouds with light and variable winds. Temperatures fall into the upper 20s. Low 27.

Tomorrow – Cloud cover advances quickly during the morning hours as winds strengthen out of the east at 10-15 mph. Temperatures hover right around freezing. High 32. Snowfall reaches our area by midmorning mixed with periods of sleet into the afternoon before changing to all snow – 100%

Tomorrow Night – Overcast with northeasterly winds increasing to 10-15mph. Temperatures drop slightly into the upper 20s. Low 28. Snowfall will continue heavily throughout the evening and overnight – 100%

Saturday – Overcast with winds becoming northerly at 10-15mph. Temperatures remain sub-freezing. High 30. The high will probably occur in the morning with temperatures dropping throughout the day.  Heavy snow will continue into the afternoon – 100%

Another Whopper?

High pressure will provide clear skies through the day tomorrow into Friday morning as the much awaited storm system tracks northward just inland along the coast. How much snow will we get? Models indicate that we will be straddling the rain/snow line Friday into Saturday which makes this a tricky forecast. As of now it looks as though a considerable amount of sleet will fall midday Friday changing to snow overnight, continuing into the day Saturday. Accumulations of 12 inches or greater are expected. The national weather service has already issued a winter storm watch stating, "this storm has the potential to be similar to the December 19th storm." However we do not currently agree with the 20 or so inches NWS is calling for at this time.
 
Tonight:  Partly cloudy with light northwesterly winds.  Temperatures will dip into the mid 20s Low 24.

Tomorrow:  Mostly sunny with light and variable winds.  Temperatures will reach just into the lower 40s High 41.

Tomorrow Night:  Mostly cloudy with light and variable winds.  Temperatures will drop into the mid 20s High 26.

Friday:  Cloudy with winds becoming easterly at 5 mph.  Temperatures will remain in the lower 30s. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area tonight with snow accumulating 3-6 inches.  Tomorrow and Thursday will be pleasant as high pressure builds with temperatures in the 40s, but another storm system will affect our area over the weekend.  Precipitation should begin late Friday afternoon into Saturday, depending on the storm track.  This looks like another massive winter weather system coming this weekend.

Tonight – Overcast with light northerly winds. Temperatures fall into the mid 20s. Low 26. Snow will begin later this evening into the overnight hours.  Accumulations of 3-6 inches – 90%

An upper level disturbance will cause increasing clouds into tomorrow night colliding with some wrap around moisture from a low pressure system pushing off the coast of North Carolina. This combination will provide a chance for light rain quickly turning into snow tomorrow night as temperatures drop below freezing. Little accumulation is expected. High pressure will force its way back in to our west allowing for clearing skies Wednesday morning and the return of some sunshine through Thursday night.

Freezing temperatures stick around through the beginning of a week as a Canadian dome of high pressure fills in behind the storm system that passed over the weekend. Overnight lows will run in the mid 20s, while highs will struggle to reach 40 even with plenty of sun and calm winds into tomorrow. Clouds invade Tuesday as an upper level disturbance collides with energy from a low pressure system moving well off the coast allowing for a chance for some flurries overnight Tuesday.

High’s Below Freezing?!

Cold air will penetrate into the area tonight and tomorrow giving us temperatures well below freezing overnight only climbing just around freezing for the high on Friday.  The low pressure system that brought wintry weather to the Texas-Oklahoma area earlier this week will move across the Virginia/North Carolina border beginning Friday night, providing a chance for another round of measurable snowfall.  Snow will continue throughout the earlier part of Saturday before pushing out Saturday night as high pressure builds into the area. An extremely cold air mass will be in place Saturday giving us high temperatures only in the twenties and lows overnight in the teens. Total snowfall accumulations for the storm will be around 3-5 inches and almost a foot along the border to our south.  Clouds break on Sunday allowing for sunshine, but temperatures will not climb much above freezing.

 

Tonight – Increasing cloudiness with winds shifting northerly around 5-10 mph. Temperatures will drop significantly into the night into the lower 20s. Low 21.

High pressure will be booted out of our area as an upper level disturbance scatters light cloud cover through our area tomorrow afternoon followed quickly by a surface cold front moving from northwest to southeast tomorrow night. Temperatures behind the front will keep highs for Friday and Saturday below freezing and with the approaching low pressure system Friday we have a significant chance for snow Friday night through midday Saturday. The majority of the snow will remain to our southwest, but as of now 2-4 inches are expected for our area.

Last Day of Warmth Before A Cool Next Week

Pressure gradients will increase as a strong center of low pressure passes to our west tonight into tomorrow producing strong and gusty winds. Precipitation will continue into the late night, heavy at times. The atmosphere will dry quickly tomorrow as plenty of dry air is wrapped into the low allowing for some sun and warmer temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. A strengthening low pressure system will pass over from the south tomorrow certainly bringing plenty of rain, heavy at times. Rainfall amounts will be 0.75 to 1.00 inches in areas.
